Hundreds of thousands of Eritreans give a spectacular welcome to Ethiopian Prime Minster, Abiy Ahmed

Ethiopia’s Prime Minster, Abiy Ahmed arrived in Asmara this morning to a red carpet welcome on his first visit to Eritrea. On his arrival, the Prime Minister was accorded a guard of honour at Asmara airport. The Prime Minster was received by President Isaias Afwerki, government officials, religious and communities leaders.

The Prim Minster was welcomed with spectacular and colourful displays. Thousands of people lined up at the main streets and waiving Eritrean and Ethiopian flags, and singing and dancing.  Mr Abiy was driven through crowded of people greeting the public.  It was an amazing scene for the Ethiopian leader to greet people closely in person and a testimony how peaceful the country and people are. 

A series of programmes are scheduled in this short but very important visit. Stepping up normalisation of relationship, stabilisation of Ethiopia, implementation of the border ruling and economic engagement and other ties in strategic areas are likely to be the centrepiece of the talk between the two leaders.

The Prim Minster is also expected to visit different parts of the country to observe development projects. The visit will take the level of the relations between the two countries to the next level.

Following Ethiopia’s decision to fully accept and unconditionally implement the international border ruling, responding to the positive move, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, sent a delegation to Addis Ababa that received very warm welcome. 

Ethiopian Chief of Staff of the Prime Office, Fitsum Arege, wrote: HE PM Dr Abiy Ahmed is very warmly received by HE President Isaias Afwerki & an amazing number of people when he arrived in Asmara for this historic visit. The visit offers a spectacular opportunity to decidedly move forward peace for the good of our people.
